Lab 1a

This map shows the average annual precipitation in California from 1961-1990. The colors represent the amount of precipitation in inches. As you can see the range goes from dark red (0-5 in) to purple (over 100 in). It is really interesting to see that there are significantly more reds and oranges than blues and purples, especially in southern California. This can be explained by several factors that included differences in latitude, elevation, distance from the ocean, and even in the way weather tends to travel across the state. For me this is interesting because I love the weather, especially rainy weather. Unfortunately, I live in Los Angeles and we do not have much rain here. I guess I should move up north, possibly to the county of Del Norte.

This is a map of the region near Indianapolis, Indiana and shows the different areas that police have been dispatched to investigate a pit bull attack. In addition to displaying where the cops were dispatched to, it shows the median household income. Using this information one can conclude that there is a greater chance of having a pit bull attack in a poorer neighborhood as opposed to a richer one. I find this interesting because I have a strong passion for dogs, and feel that pit bulls have a bad rap for being aggressive. Instead of blaming a breed of dog, we should blame the owners for the attacks. This map demonstrates this to a degree. I say that knowing more information is still needed. Are there fewer attacks in richer neighborhoods because the owners properly care for the dogs, or because they do not own pit bulls? If more research is done it may be possible to rid the pit bulls of their inherent bad name.

This map shows where campgrounds are located throughout California. Campgrounds are broken down into three categories: federal, state, and private. On the website where this map came from it is an interactive map and you can click on an area to zoom in. Also, you can click on the campground to go to another page for information on that particular campground. I love camping and find this to be a particularly helpful map. I can find an area where I want to go camping, find a campsite, and reserve it in a matter of minutes. If only everything in life was this simple.
